Obituary for James L. Owens, Sr.

James L.  Owens, Sr.
James L. Owens, Sr. a longtime resident of Erie, died Sunday morning, March 7, 2010, at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie following an extended illness. He was born in Oakman, Georgia, May 7, 1930, son of the late Aristo and Tennie Pack Owens. After being stationed in many places with the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Erie in 1963.

He was employed as a production supervisor for Riley Stoker Corp. for 28 years before retiring in 1992. He attended Fairmont High School in Fairmont, GA before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Lamb of God Lutheran Church and the Zukor Club. Jim was an avid baseball player, pitching for an Air Force team and the Riley Stoker Industrial League team in Erie.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dolores Liocano Owens; five sons, James L. Owens, Jr. and his wife Mary, Joseph F. Owens and his wife Angela, Douglas A. Owens all of Erie, Michael T. Owens and his wife Darlene of Cochranton, PA and Donald A. Owens and his wife Deborah of Duncan, SC; three daughters, Deborah L. Danielewicz and her husband Michael, Mildred E. Roth and her husband John all of Erie and Laurie J. Bulkley and her husband Dave of Preston, Conn.; a brother, William Owens and his wife Muriel of Fla. and four sisters, Ruth Collis of Chatsworth, GA, Velma Harrison and her husband Harry of Canton, GA, Ann Swanson and her husband Luke of Calhoun, GA and Patsy Mealor and her husband Don of Sugar Valley, GA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Jim is preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret B. Owens and four brothers, Edward, Robert, John and David Owens.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of Pine Ave. and East Gore Road, I-90 Exit 29). A service will be held there Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Bernard Bischoff. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home Activity Fund, 560 East 3rd St., Erie, PA 16507.
