Ruth O. Thompson, 98, of North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 4, 2018 in Asheville, NC. She was born in Venango Township, Erie County, PA on August 2, 1920 a daughter of the late Ross and Fay Bemis Thompson.
Ruth graduated from Academy High School in Erie. In 1962, she graduated from Buffalo Bible School. She earned her teacher's certificate from Western Carolina University. Ruth was a teacher in North Carolina for 30 years at Eliada Homes and most recently at Temple Baptist School. She was a house mother in children's homes in Williamsville, NY, Quincy, PA, and Asheville, NC for a number of years. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Asheville, NC where she enjoyed doing mission and volunteer work and was a former member of Phillipsville United Methodist Church. Ruth's strong faith led her to devote her life to full-time Christian work.
Ruth enjoyed cooking, baking, and crafts. She also was known for her love of snacks and games. She could be seen nibbling in the kitchen on popcorn and other sweets. Aunt Ruth enjoyed playing endless board games and cards with her nieces, nephews, and children at the homes. She loved her family and treated her nieces and nephews as her own. For years, she shared her love and gifts across the miles to her 16 nephews and nieces and their families. Ruth was a selfless person who was always giving to others in her family, at the homes and in her church community.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence E. (Agnes) and Robert J. (Jean) Thompson and one sister, Frances Foster.
Survivors include one sister, Vera Leona Smith and her husband, Paul, of Erie, one brother-in-law Merle Foster of Florida; five cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will also be held Sunday, November 11th at 6:00 at Temple Baptist Church in Asheville, NC.
