Obituary for Paul F. Speice

Paul F. Speice, 87, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Thursday May, 3, 2018 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Erie on June 26, 1930 a son of the late Harold and Marie Engist Speice.

Paul was a 1948 graduate of Cathedral Prep and was a graduate and teacher of the GE Apprentice Program. He worked for GE for over 25 years and went on to become Director at Camp Notre Dame for over 10 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Erie Aquarium Society.

Paul raised tropical fish for many years and hosted Guppies to Groupers and the Aquatic Maestro TV shows. He developed the National Aquatics Program for 4H and wrote a monthly column in a national tropical fish publication for 30 years. He was a poet, a speaker and toastmaster, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was a basketball enthusiast having played until the age of 81.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Schuschu Speice and two brothers, Msgr. Lawrence Speice and James Speice.

Survivors include five daughters, Kathy Bastow, Paula Mielnik (Rick), Laurie Kennedy (Bill), Linda Stolarski (Don), and Chris Harrity (Mike), all of Erie; one son, Pat Speice (Diane) of Erie; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Ken), Patrick, Jr. (Karen), Megan, Erin, Katy (Uli), Ricky (Crystal), Marc, Matt, Rachel, Adam (Ange), Luke, and Alex; four great grandchildren, Natalie, Enna, Nora, and Q; several in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will be in Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
