Teacher

Mr. Orbanek, or “Mr. O” as we called him, was one of my favorite teachers at St. George from 1974-1977. I didn’t realize it then, but it must have been his first teaching position. He was a great teacher – he was the first male teacher our class had ever had. At first we thought he was “mean”, but by the end of the first year we all liked him and were secretly happy that he moved up grades with us. I remember him walking around with a yardstick – an intimidation tactic, which worked! If/when it broke he would tape it to a new one. It was several thick by the end of the year. He also had a way of squeezing coins out of 6th graders to adopt or help feed orphan children. Once the class raised a certain amount of money it was sent to some charity and we received a certificate saying we helped that child. If I recall, the class would name the child and write their name on the certificate. The bulletin board was covered with certificates. It became like a competition between the classes which ultimately helped more children in the long run. My sympathies to his children, I’m thankful to have had your dad as a teacher – maybe we broke him in a little bit for you, or else he knew all the tricks by the time you came along.  RIP, Mr. O.
