Elizabeth R.  Ostrow (Balla)
Elizabeth Rose Balla Ostrow, of Erie, departed peacefully on Wednesday November 13, 2013. She was the beloved wife of J. Leonard Ostrow who preceded her in death and was a judge for the Disciplinary Board of Attorneys for Pennsylvania and respected City of Erie Councilman for many years. The Ostrow Scholarship Fund donated monies to various schools and colleges in the local area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Catherine Winicki Balla; her first husband, John J. Dombrowski, and her sister, Jean Trohoske. Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine Cline and her husband Larry of Erie, Dianne Morosky and her husband Robert of Columbus, OH and Key Largo, FL, and Joann Gigliotti of Erie; six grandchildren, Kevin Perseo, Marc Gulick, Alan Gulick, Elaina Concheck, Rebecca Hoffman and Michael Morosky; eight great grandchildren, Kara and Leah Concheck, Lily Hoffman, Anthony and Michael Gulick, and Harrison, Madeleine and Mary Jane Morosky; one sister, Helen Fromknecht of Erie; and many nieces and nephews.
She graduated from St. Stanislaus School, Academy High School and Hamot Nursing School with an R.N. Degree and attended Erie Business College. She was employed at Hamot Hospital, V.A. Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital and retired with 12 years of service from the Millcreek Community Hospital. She was a member of St. Joseph Bread of Life Community, the Lawyers Wives Auxiliary, St. Mark's Ladies Auxiliary, Temple Sisterhood Auxiliary, American Cancer Society, American Heart Society, and the American Red Cross Association. She volunteered her services with the Ostrow Apartments and belonged to the South Erie Turners Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services there at 11:00 a.m.. Burial will be private in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
