Obituary for James C. Orr, Sr.

James C.  Orr, Sr.
James C. Orr, Sr., 87, a resident of North East since 2004, formerly of Avon, Ohio, died peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2009 at the St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. following a lengthy illness. He was born in Hendersonville, N.C. on August 24, 1921 a son of the late Henry and Lucretia Laughter Orr.

James had been an electrical plant operator at the Cleveland Electrical Illuminating Co. (First Energy Corp) for over 27 years and retired in 1983. He was a long time member of the St. Martin Tours Catholic Church in Valley City, Ohio, attended Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Harborcreek, Pa., a member of the VFW Post in Avon, Ohio, and an avid woodworker. He was a Navy veteran of WW II serving as a Chief Petty Officer in the North African and Italian Campaign.

He was the beloved husband for 63 years of Rita Mayville Orr whom he married on April 28, 1945; the loving father of Dee Zarycki and her husband, John, of North East, Pa. and James C. Orr, Jr. and his wife, Eileen, of Wakeman, Ohio; the loving grandfather of Elizabeth Orr, of Columbus, Ohio, James C. Orr, III, of Findlay, Ohio, and Anna Zarycki, of North East, Pa; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Thursday evening 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. including a vigil service there at 7:30 p.m. officiated by Msgr. Gerald Ritchie of Our Lady of Mercy Church. Further visitation will be on Saturday morning in the Gathering Space at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Valley City, Ohio from 10 a.m. until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon in the church officiated by the pastor, Fr. Thomas Dunphy. Burial will be in St. Martin of Tours Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Habitat for Humanity, 413 E. 9th St., Erie, PA 16503.
